CASE STUDY: Leadership Development
USDA Forest Service, Region 8
The Southern Region of the USDA Forest Service (Region 8) manages 13 million acres of federal land in 13 states and Puerto Rico. The 45-member leadership body for the region includes Forest Supervisors and Regional Directors, headed by the Regional Forester. The Regional Forester wanted to advance the capability of his leadership team to collaboratively lead the region, to align regional priorities across all units, and to strategically frame and manage the business.
RRC was hired to design and facilitate working sessions over an 18-month period to transform the way the team thought about their leadership role and how they implemented it for the benefit of the region. This advanced leadership training, using a collaborative, interactive process, proved highly effective.
As a result of this work, the leadership team developed a new leadership structure that supports shared and strategic decision-making among all 45 members and is defined in an official Charter, and then developed a strategic framework to establish regional priorities to guide the Program of Work and resource allocation. The strategic framework is the guiding document for the entire region, and each Regional Director and Forest Supervisor is accountable to align their units with it.
